Zyrardw

Żyrardw is a town in central Poland with 31,900 inhabitants (2004). Situated in the Masovian Voivodship (since 1999), previously in Skierniewice Voivodship (19751998).

Education

History

Founded by the French investor Philippe de Girard (from Lourmarin), it developed during the 19th century into a textile mill city. The town museum is nowadays located in the former palace of the magnate Dittrich family.

Famous people

  • A known son of the city is Prime Minister Leszek Miller (born in Żyrardw on July 3, 1946), who started his professional life as electrician in a local textile factory.
