Zion's Co-operative Mercantile Institution

  in 1868, Zion's Co-operative Mercantile Institution or ZCMI is widely regarded as the first department store in the U.S., and still continues to operate today.  ZCMI is a publicly owned company with over 1,000 stockholders. In 1988 The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church) owned 51 percent of ZCMI's stock. ZCMI was sold to the May Department Stores Company in December 1999. ZCMI was operated as a division of May's Meier & Frank division until 2002 when the stores were re-branded Meier & Frank.
