Yuzawa, Niigata

Yuzawa (湯沢町; -machi) is an onsen (hot spring) town located in Minamiuonuma District in the mountains of the Chuetsu region of Niigata Prefecture, Japan. Served by the Echigo-Yuzawa and Gala Yuzawa stations of the Joetsu Shinkansen line, the town's economy is reliant principally on winter sports, including skiing and snowboarding. Yasunari Kawabata's classic novel Snow Country takes place in Yuzawa. As of 2003, the town has an estimated population of 8,884 and a density of 24.89 persons per km². The total area is 357.00 km².
