Yulemyulem The word yulem is derived from ylem, which is the first substance from which the elements were formed. Specifically, yulem is the quality of having been formed naturally into an object of unique interest. The three operative words in the definition are naturally and unique interest. Naturally is included to exclude human-made objects. With yulem the emphasis is on unique interest, not uniqueness. Many objects are unique (as in every rose is unique) but not all are of unique interest. An object that is formed naturally and is uniquely interesting is considered a yulem object. Clearly this is a subjective consideration but therein is the importance of a yulem object. We have three conditions to achieve yulem. - Almost any natural object could be uniquely interesting to someone and is of minimal value.
- Other objects could be considered uniquely interesting by a very large number of people. The value of such an object could be priceless.
- Unlike fine arts and crafts, yulem objects can be obtained by anyone who has the sensitivity to recognize them.
Yulem is distinguished from found art in that no manipulation is allowed, other than a shift in context.
