The county is named for William Cocke Young, an early Texas settler and soldier. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,411 km² (931 mi²). 2,389 km² (922 mi²) of it is land and 22 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.91% water. There are 8,504 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (9/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 90.98% White, 1.21% Black or African American, 0.64% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 5.28% from other races, and 1.58% from two or more races. 10.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,167 households out of which 30.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.00% are married couples living together, 9.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.10% are non-families. 26.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.94. In the county, the population is spread out with 25.00% under the age of 18, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 24.70% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 19.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 91.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.70 males. The median income for a household in the county is $30,499, and the median income for a family is $36,698. Males have a median income of $30,257 versus $19,441 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,710. 15.70% of the population and 12.00% of families are below the poverty line.
