Yot PoliceYOT stands for Youth Offending Team. The YOT work for the police in Britain and work with youth offenders. They try to give them a new start in life and drive them away from crime. A person working for the YOT would be called a YCO or Youth Crime Officer. YCOs do not have to wear uniform. These people will have many jobs to do, from interviewing youngsters to organizing activities for them, either in the work place or outside. Most YOT centres also act as a form of youth club, with many things to do from basketball to woodcraft. Many youngsters are sent to YOT centres after being caught for committing a crime and being ordered to go there for help. Sometimes the parents are interviewed to see if there is a link between family life and the crimes committed. One frequent finding is that many children that commit crimes grew up without a father-figure, but this is never the complete reason or only reason for crimes being committed. Other problems which may cause them to commit crimes are abuse at home or family arguments, i.e., stressful situations. These can affect the child's view on life and change a child's behaviour. The YOT also try to prevent children from re-offending or starting on a criminal career. They travel to schools and talk to children in assemblies, informing them on the effects of crime and how it makes other people feel. They tell them how respect for those who commit crimes is lost by the local community. The YOT admit that this will not stop every child from committing crimes, but may at least stop a few, thus reducing problems for both the child and the community. Being a YCO is a tiring job but many say it is worth helping other children and watching them start again in life and making all the right decisions.
