York UnionThe York Union Society, generally abbreviated to the York Union, is a debating society whose membership is drawn from the University of York. The York Union was founded in 2003, its constitution and aims based on those of other Union societies such as the Oxford Union and the Cambridge Union, and the primary impetus for its foundation being the reaction to the existing debating society being deratified. Following a lengthy set of discussions at a local cafe called The Patio, a pattern of events was decided upon and the first president, Tom Parry, was named. Initially the society was faced with considerable opposition from the then executive committee of York University Students' Union, partly due to its similar name, partly due to its relationship with the existing debating society, a society which had enjoyed considerable enmity with YUSU.
