Yongsan Garrison

The Yongsan Garrison is a US military base located in Seoul, South Korea. It contains the headquarters for the US military presence in Korea. The garrison comprises 2.5 km² (630 acre) of suburban-style living in the heart of Korea's capital city, golf course and 440,000 m² (4.7 million ft²) of floor space in hundreds of buildings. The South Korean government and the US government will relocate the facility 50 km further south, near the US airforce base at Osan. South Korea has traditionally regarded this garrison as a hostage that prevents the U.S. army from abaodoning Seoul, which is only about 65 km from the DMZ. However, the garrison in the capital comes to arouse Korean anti-U.S. sentiments. As a result of this relocation and the planned abolishment of the U.S. troops near the DMZ, the U.S. will pull back all troops from the north of the Han River. Note: 297,000 m² of land, to include the golf course was given back to the City of Seoul in November of 1992 to become Yongsan Family Park and the site of the new National Museum.
