History - May 7, 1872 Opened for business as The Yokohama Railroad Station(First generation). One of the first Rail Stations opened in Japan. The location of the first Yokohama station is now the Sakuragicho Station.
- July 11, 1887 The rail west of Tokaido Main Line's Yokohama Station and upto Kozu Station opened. The need occurred for cars that head to the Shinbashi Station and Kozu Station to reverse direction at the Yokohama Station using a switchback.
- August 1, 1898 To get rid of the Tokaido Main Line's switch back a short direct line was opened that does not pass pass through Yokohama station. Cars directly servicing stations west of Yokohama Station then began stopping at Hodogaya Station instead of Yokohama Station, and a "Small Driven Train" (Lightweight Rail?) was setup connecting Yokohama–Hodogaya.
- August 15, 1915 In order to avoid a pass through at Tokaido Main Line's Yokohama Station, a station was opened nearby the present day Takashima Station and became the second generation Yokohama Station. The first generation Yokohama Station was renamed the Sakaragicho Station and the Yokohama–Hodogaya "Small Driven Train" was done away with.
- September 1, 1923 The station was destroyed in a fire in the Kanto Great Earthquake Disaster.
- September 7, 1923 Tentative Station Building was established. The station was in business for some period of time.
- March 18, 1928 Tokyo Yokohama Rail (presently the Tokyu Toyoko Line was connected to the station.
- October 15, 1928 Becoming the third generation, the current Yokohama Station opened for business in a location that is on the northern side of the second generation station, and this is also where it currently operates. The Tokaido Main Line was made the current route.
- February 5, 1930 Keihin Electric Rail (presently the Keikyu Main Line) was connected to the station.
- December 27, 1933 Kaminaka Rail (presently the Sotetsu Main Line) was connected to the station.
- March 29, 1945 The large half of the station's facilities were destroyed in the Yokohama Great Air Raid.
- Decemeber 9, 1957 North side underground entrance opened.
- December 1, 1965 The ticket sales area, "Midori no Madoguchi" (lit. Green Window), opened.
- September 4, 1976 The Yokohama City(-operated) Subway Line Nr.3 was connected to Yokohama Station.
- November 7, 1980 The new east entrance station building and the east-west passage opened.
- January 31, 2004 Tokyu Toyoko Line platform was reopened underground.
- February 1, 2004 Yokohama High-Speed Rail Minato Mirai 21 Line was connected to the Yokohama Station. With Tokyu Toyoko and Yokohama High Speed Rail Minato Mirai 21 beginning mutual direct service, the sharing of the North-South passage began.
