Yoakum County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 7,322. Its county seat is Plains6. The county is named for Henderson King Yoakum, a Texas historian.

There are 2,469 households out of which 43.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.80% are married couples living together, 8.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 18.70% are non-families. 17.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.95 and the average family size is 3.34. In the county, the population is spread out with 32.10% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 26.80% from 25 to 44, 21.30% from 45 to 64, and 11.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 94.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.40 males. The median income for a household in the county is $32,672, and the median income for a family is $36,772. Males have a median income of $32,188 versus $19,913 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,504. 19.60% of the population and 17.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.00% of those under the age of 18 and 13.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
