In the English language, yo is a common interjection. It is often linguistically interchangeable with the word "hey": Yo, what's up?, Yo! Wait for me!. The word can also stand alone as a greeting. Yo is the modern equivalent of "ahoy", which has become literary or archaic. The two salutations have the same naval origin, as the vowel most easily projected across open water. Yo has a larger range of uses in hip-hop or gangsta culture, some of which have expanded to a wider audience through mass media exposure. Examples:
