is a name for the
Anglian
language
of the historic
Anglo-Saxon
kingdom
of
Northumbria
whose territory is divided now between
England
and
Scotland
. A remnant of the language survived under the name
Inglis
in the Lowlands of Scotland until the early
16th century
, when it acquired the name
Scots
. (Until the late
15th century
the name Scots - or Scottis - had referred to the
Gaelic
of Highlanders and Islanders.)
