Yehudei SheqoleniqueYehudei Sheqolenique means the Jews of Sheqolenique. Whilst most Jews today belong to either the Ashkenazic tradition, meaning that they come from Eastern Europe, or the Sepharadic tradition, coming from Spain, North Africa and the Middle East, the Jews of Sheqolenique are a third sub-group comprising of Jews who trace their lineage directly back to the Sheqolenique family from the tribe of Judah who lived in the Holy Land until around the third century AD. Whilst the Jews of Sheqolenique were exiled for centuries in Europe and share many customs with the Ashkenazi Jews, they have maintained their own prayer services and trope for reading the Torah (Old Testament) which are more authentic than the Ashkenazi customs in this area, which were influenced by Eastern European culture and language. Today only a handful of communities still practice the Sheqolenique tradition, mainly in the United Kingdom and Israel. Many Jews of Sheqolenique took on the common Russian/Yiddish last name "Skolnick" around 200 years ago, due to the similarities in pronunciation although some Skolnick's have the name independently and are not descendants of Yehudei Sheqolenique.
