YamaliaYamalia (Yamalo-Nenets, Ямало-Ненецкий автономный округ) is an autonomous district of Tyumen Oblast in the Russian Federation. It is the largest administrative division of Tyumen with an area 750,300 km² but is also the most sparsely populated with only around 550,000 inhabitants. The administrative center is Salekhard (pop. ~35,000), and the largest city by population is Noyabrsk (pop. ~ 100,000). Administrative Division Districts Yamalia Autonomous District consists of the following districts (Russian: районы): Demographics Population (2002): 507,006 Ethnic groups: As oil workers from across Russia far outnumber indigenous people in the region it should come as no surprise that the Nenetses, at 26,435, only make up 5.2% of the population, preceeded by Tatars at 27,734 (5.4%), Ukrainians at 66,080 (13%) and ethnic Russians at 298,359 (58.8%). Other prominent ethnic groups include Belarusians (8,989 or 1.77%), Khants (8,760 or 1.72%), Azerbaijanis (8,353 or 1.65%), Bashkirs (7,932 or 1.56%), Komis (6,177 or 1.22%), Moldovans (5,400 or 1.06%) and so on.
