WWJ-TV is the CBS affiliate in Detroit, Michigan. Its transmitters are located in Southfield, Michigan and the station shares its studios with its sister station WKBD. The station began broadcasting CBS programming after WJBK became a FOX affiliate in 1994. On July 24, 1995, CBS purchased the station. Before that the station was the first African-American owned television station in the U.S. and was marketed towards Detroit's urban viewers. WWJ is unusual in that the station, being in a major television market and affiliated with a major network, does not produce and broadcast a local newscast. The station did produce a 11 PM newscast starting in April 2001 in conjunction with WKBD, who was broadcasting its own local newscast at 10 PM. However, due to low ratings the newscast was dropped in December 2002.
