Wrva-tv

WRVA-TV was a VHF television station on Channel 12 in Richmond, Virginia in the United States. It was owned by the company which operated WRVA AM-FM, well-established Richmond radio stations. While newspapers were often the source of financing for new radio and television stations in the early years of development, later Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules discouraged common ownership of both print and broadcast media in major markets in order to ensure public access to independent sources of news. In the 1950s, in competition for Richmond's second new television frequency, WRNL (AM-FM) was owed by the major a local newspaper company. (the letters of the WRNL call sign stood for Richmond Newsleader. WRVA and WRVA-FM were owned by a tobacco company. Both applicants had good records and were financially qualified. The frequency was awarded by the FCC to the company which did not also control a newspaper in the same market. WRVA-TV was initially an American Broadcasting Company (ABC) television network affiliate. It later switched to the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) network. Around 1968, WRVA-TV was sold to Jefferson Pilot Broadcasting, a subsidiary of Jefferson Pilot Life Insurance Company, owners of WBT and WBT-TV in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Richmond station was renamed WWBT.
