Wpat

WPAT are two radio stations licensed to Paterson, New Jersey which serves the New York City Metropolitan area on 930am and 93.1fm. The AM station first signed on in 1941 and the FM station signed on in 1957 originally from their studios in Newark, New Jersey moving to new studios on Church Street in Paterson and finally from their last studio on Broad Street in Clifton, New Jersey. For years WPAT operated both frequencies with a Beautiful music format then for a short time they played Country then some Easy Listening and finally to Soft Rock until the stations sale. On January 10, 1996 WPAT ceased being an English language broadcaster when control of the stations were switched to their new owners. WPAT-AM was sold to Heftel Broadcasting which changed the format to ethnic/leased while the FM station was sold to Spanish Broadcasting System who changed the format to a spanish soft contemporary. WPAT DJ Karen Carson and Operations Director Ken McKenzie were the last voices heard on the station before the switch-over. The AM transmitter is still located in Clifton at the old Broad Street studios and the FM transmitter was originally located atop of the World Trade Center in downtown Manhattan in New York City but it was destroyed as a result of the September 11, 2001 attacks, It was eventually moved to the Empire State building.
