Worth is a town located in Jefferson County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 234. The Town of Worth is located in the southeast corner of the county.

Geography

The south town line is the border of Oswego County, New York, and the east (and part of the north) town line is the border of Lewis County, New York. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 112.2 km² (43.3 mi²). 111.9 km² (43.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.21% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 234 people, 96 households, and 67 families residing in the town. The population density is 2.1/km² (5.4/mi²). There are 259 housing units at an average density of 2.3/km² (6.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.59% White, 3.42% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 2.99% from two or more races. 1.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 96 households out of which 32.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% are married couples living together, 4.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% are non-families. 25.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.93. In the town the population is spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 32.1% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 116.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 127.8 males. The median income for a household in the town is $29,028, and the median income for a family is $31,250. Males have a median income of $27,500 versus $23,636 for females. The per capita income for the town is $12,584. 13.9% of the population and 9.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.4% of those under the age of 18 and 26.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
