Wishbone Ash

Wishbone Ash are a British classic rock band, formed in Devon, 1966, as The Empty Vessels, then Tanglewood.

History

The band settled on the name Wishbone Ash and soon began performing in England with, among others, Deep Purple. They have blended elements of jazz fusion, hard rock and other styles into their distinctive twin guitar-lead sound. The original line-up was Andy Powell, Ted Turner, Martin Turner and Steve Upton. In 1970, the band released Wishbone Ash to generally positive reviews and sales. The peak of their artistic success was probably the concept album 'Argus', released in 1972. In 1974, Ted Turner quit the band and was replaced by Laurie Wisefield. A succession of albums were released throughout the 1970s. During the 1980s multiple personnel changes occurred in the band. In spite of a dedicated following, Wishbone Ash was not able to achieve widespread success. That said, the band still has a very large fan base and are constantly touring, currently as of 2005.

Q: A T.Rex Connection?

  • A: Wishbone Ash wrote a song about the site where Marc Bolan of T Rex died called Bolan's Monument. The site is now Bolan's Rock Shrine visited by many people (from around the world) each year and cared for on a charitable basis by TAG (founded in 1999).
