Wise County, Virginia Wise County is a county located in the state of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 40,123. Its county seat is Wise6. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,050 km² (405 mi²). 1,046 km² (404 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.29% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 40,123 people, 16,013 households, and 11,513 families residing in the county. The population density is 38/km² (99/mi²). There are 17,792 housing units at an average density of 17/km² (44/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.88% White, 1.78% Black or African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 16,013 households out of which 31.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.20% are married couples living together, 12.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.10% are non-families. 25.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.91. In the county, the population is spread out with 23.00% under the age of 18, 10.20% from 18 to 24, 28.00% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 13.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.60 males. The median income for a household in the county is $26,149, and the median income for a family is $32,898. Males have a median income of $28,983 versus $21,029 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,271. 20.00% of the population and 16.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.30% of those under the age of 18 and 12.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. Towns The independent city of Norton, which lies within the confines of Wise County, is not a part of the county.
