  The Wilton Diptych

The Wilton Diptych is a portable altarpiece dating from around 1395-9. It was painted for King Richard II. The painting consists of two oak panels. On the left hand side panel of the diptych, Richard is shown kneeling. Beside him are the saints John the Baptist, Edward the Confessor and Edmund. John the Baptist was Richard's Patron Saint, and Saint Edward and Saint Edmund had both been English kings. The Virgin Mary is depicted on the right hand side of the diptych, along with a company of eleven angels. It is owned by the National Gallery of London.
