Wilmington is a town located in Windham County, Vermont. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,225.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 106.9 km² (41.3 mi²). 102.1 km² (39.4 mi²) of it is land and 4.7 km² (1.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.39% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,225 people, 992 households, and 597 families residing in the town. The population density is 21.8/km² (56.4/mi²). There are 2,232 housing units at an average density of 21.9/km² (56.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.80% White, 0.22% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 0.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 992 households out of which 26.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.6% are married couples living together, 7.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.8% are non-families. 32.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.84. In the town the population is spread out with 21.6% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 30.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 101.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.7 males. The median income for a household in the town is $37,396, and the median income for a family is $46,786. Males have a median income of $29,511 versus $23,417 for females. The per capita income for the town is $25,171. 9.3% of the population and 7.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.2% of those under the age of 18 and 5.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. In 2002 an anti-nudity ordinance of the town has been repealed by a public vote. As a result the traditional clothing-optional status of the Ledges area is continued.
