William W. Hiltz

William W. Hiltz was Mayor of Toronto in 1924. During his term he introduced time-clocks for Toronto city workers. Originally from Georgetown, Ontario, Hiltz was descended from the Hiltz family that previously immigrated from Europe (presumably Germany) Hiltz, William W. The Hilts families left the Palatinate part of Germany with the other Palatinates because of the wars and famine, and came to the New World. The ancestors of William Hiltz arrived in America in the early 1700's. They were pushed back into the western part of New York State where they farmed in the Mohawk Valley area. During the Revolution Joseph Hilts was brought as a small child, by his grandfather Joseph Petrie, to the Niagara area of Ontario, Canada, in 1779. The sons of Joseph Hilts homesteaded in Esquesing and Erin Townships in Ont.after receiving land grants. That is where William W. Hiltz was born. He changed the "S" to "Z" for personal reasons, when he became Mayor of Toronto. .
