William Mayne

William Mayne (1928-) is a British writer of children's fiction. He was described as one of the outstanding children's authors of the 20th Century by the Oxford Companion to Children's Literature, and is the winner of the Carnegie Medal and Guardian fiction awards. He wrote more than 100 books, including a trilogy about the legend of King Arthur called Candlefast, Cradlefast and Earthfast. In 2004 William Mayne was charged with sexual assault and rape of underage girls, between the years of 1960-1975. He was convicted on May 5 2004 of indecent assault after a guilty plea, and sentenced to two and a half years in prison; the judge ordered 'not guilty' verdicts on the rape charges.
