William Holabird

Born: September 11th, 1854 in Amenia Union, New York Died: July 19th, 1923 in Evanston, Illinois Partnered with: Martin Roche Holabird studied at the Military Academy at West Point but resigned and moved to Chicago. He worked for William Le Baron Jenney and afterwards for Burnham and Root. He established his own firm in 1880 and Roche joined him in 1881. Together they contributed many innovations to the Chicago School including the Chicago School windows, a facade made almost entirely of glass. They designed buildings including the Marquette Building and the Gage Building. The later included a faade designed by Louis Sullivan and was cited a Chicago architectural landmark in 1962. Holabird and Roche were very dedicated to preserving the Chicago School style and they continued to create buildings in that style until their deaths.
