William Gentry

Major General Sir William George Gentry KBE CB DSO and bar MC (Greece) Bronze Star Medal (US) (b. 20 February 1899 d. 13 October 1991) was a distinguished New Zealand military leader. He attended the Wellington College from 1913 to 1915 and then the Royal Military College, Duntroon. In 1919 he graduated from Duntroon and in 1920 served in India. In 1939 he was promoted to Major rank, just before World War II. During the war he served under Lord Freyberg of Wellington (another alumnus from Wellington), developing a relationship where he could question Freyberg 'without arousing impatience or irritation'1. From 1943 to 1944 he was Deputy Chief of Staff. He was New Zealand Chief of Staff from 1952 to 1955. In 1954 Gentry was made a Companion in the Order of the Bath and 1955 was made a Knight in the Order of the British Empire.
