William Forgan Smith
William Forgan Smith
(1887-1953), was Premier of
Queensland
from 1932 to 1942. His name
Forgan
was his mother's maiden name. He was born in
Scotland
where he began as a painter and decorator in
Glasgow
. He arrived in Queensland in 1912. He entered parliament in 1915 representing the Labor Party as member for
Mackay
. Mackay is the centre of the
sugar
industry in Queensland and this was always a major priority for Forgan Smith. After he resigned as premier he became chairman of the Sugar Board.
