William Eliot, 2Nd Earl Of St Germans

William Eliot, 2nd Earl of St Germans (April 1 1767 - January 19 1845) was a British politician. He was born on April 1 1767 at Port Eliot to Edward Craggs-Eliot, 1st Baron Eliot (July 8 1727 - February 17 1804) and his wife Catherine Elliston (1735 - February 23 1804). William was educated at Pembroke College, Cambridge, taking an M.A. in 1786. He served from 1791 to 1802 as the Tory Member of Parliament for St Germans, Cornwall, and from 1802 to 1823 as the Member for Liskeard, Cornwall. From November 1791 until 1793, he was a Secretary of Legation at Berlin. On August 1 1793 he became Secretary of Embassy and Minister Plenipotentiary at The Hague until 1794. On December 15 1796, he became Minister Plenipotentiary to the Elector Palatine and to the Diet of Ratisbon. From July 5 1800 to 1804, William was Lord of the Admiralty, followed by Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs from 1807 - 1812. On November 17 1823, he succeeded as 2nd Earl of St Germans on the death of his elder brother John Eliot (September 30 1761 - November 17 1823). William married four times.
  1. On November 30 1797 at Trentham, Staffordshire to Georgina Augusta Leveson-Gower (April 13 1769 - March 24 1806). Together they had one son and three daughters

    2. Caroline Georgina Eliot (July 27 1799 - April 1865)
    3. Susan Caroline Eliot (April 12 1801 - January 15 1835)
    4. Charlotte Sophia Eliot (May 28 1802 - July 8 1839)
  2. On February 13 1809 at Heytesbury, Wiltshire, to Letitia A'Court (d. January 20 1810), with no issue.
  3. On March 7 1812 at the Earl of Powis' House, Berkeley Square, London, to Charlotte Robinson (1790 - July 3 1813), with no issue.
  4. On August 30 1814 at Walton, Warwickshire, to Susan Mordaunt (d. February 5 1830), with no issue.
