(William) Edgar Weldon
is an American real estate developer and politician. He was born in
1944
in
Wetumpka, Alabama
, and graduated from the
University of Alabama
in 1965. He then served in the
U. S. Army
.
Real estate development
With his brother Charles Weldon, he developed 20,000 apartments across the
Southern United States
in the
1970s
and
1980s
. These were securitized and sold via
Merrill Lynch
partnership with Weldon's Southeast Property Management of Birmingham remaining as the manager of the apartments. The family then bought a mortgage bank in
Kansas
and hotel in
Mountain Brook, Alabama
.
Politics
Weldon is the long-time leader in the
Alabama
Republican Party
including a stint as Chairman. He has also served as a member of the
Republican National Committee
