William Cadogan, 1St Earl CadoganWilliam Cadogan, 1st Earl Cadogan (1672 - 1726) was a noted military officer in the army of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough during the War of the Spanish Succession. He commanded the prestigious Grenadier Guards for some time. Cadogan was the son of a Dublin barrister. He joined the army in 1690 and was appointed quartermaster general to Marlborough in 1702. He was at the Battle of Blenheim (1704), Battle of Ramillies (1706) and Battle of Oudenarde (1709). His army career ended with Marlborough's; he retired from the army after the latter's dismissal in 1711. He then intrigued for the accession of the House of Hanover, by force if necessary, upon the death of Queen Anne. When the Hanoverian King George I succeeded in 1714, Cadogan received military favours from the Crown. In 1716 he put down a Jacobite rebellion and in 1718 the King made him an earl. Nonetheless, the Opposition's staunch hostility towards him meant that he had lost political influence several years before his death.
