Wilhelmstrasse

Wilhelmstrae (William street) in Berlin became during the 19th century the governmental neighbourhood of Prussia. This function was kept in Imperial Germany (18711918), the Weimar Republic (19181933) and the Third Reich (19331945). Most important ministries were located along the street, including the Foreign ministry Auswrtiges Amt, and also many foreign embassies. The street and its buildings were devastated by aerial bombing during World War II. Then, when Germany, and Berlin were split in two after the war the city planners of East Germany rebuilt much of it according to communist doctrines of aesthetics and architecture. After the fall of the Wall and the reunification of Germany the street was once more the object of renovation efforts, with many buildings in the postmodern style popping up.
