Widnes Dock

Widnes Dock was situated on the River Mersey at Widnes Built in 1833 at the end of the St Helens Canal and the Mersey. The St Helens and Runcorn Gap Railway was also sited close by. It was important because it may have been the first dock built by a railway company in the country. The dock closed in the 1970s. The site is now known as Spike Island.
