Wickliffe Mounds

Wickliffe mounds is a Mississippian culture archaeological site located in Wickliffe, Kentucky near the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. With a population probably reaching into the hundreds, Wickliffe was the center of an important chiefdom from around 1100-1300 CE. At least two Mississippian platform mounds and up to eight smaller mounds are present, along with a central plaza area. Intensive semi-professional to professional excavations have been undertaken sporadically at the site since 1913. The site was privately owned until 1983, when it came into the hands of Murray State University. Murray State conducted research, trained students, and maintained the facilities at the site until recently. In 2004, the site became the 11th State Historical Site of Kentucky and entered the control of the State Parks Service.
