Whitley County, Indiana Whitley County is a county located in the state of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 30,707. The county's county seat is Columbia City, Indiana6. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 875 km² (338 mi²). 869 km² (336 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.70% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 30,707 people, 11,711 households, and 8,607 families residing in the county. The population density is 35/km² (92/mi²). There are 12,545 housing units at an average density of 14/km² (37/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.37% White, 0.19% Black or African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. 0.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 11,711 households out of which 34.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.30% are married couples living together, 8.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.50% are non-families. 22.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.03. In the county the population is spread out with 26.70% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 28.90% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 13.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 98.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.00 males. The median income for a household in the county is $45,503, and the median income for a family is $52,872. Males have a median income of $37,325 versus $23,420 for females.
