White Shield is a census-designated place located in McLean County, North Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 348.

Geography

White Shield is located at 47°39'41" North, 101°50'43" West (47.661351, -101.845248). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 9.7 km² (3.8 mi²). 9.7 km² (3.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.53% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 348 people, 100 households, and 79 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 35.8/km² (92.9/mi²). There are 108 housing units at an average density of 11.1/km² (28.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 1.15% White, 0.00% African American, 98.56% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.29% from two or more races. 11.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 100 households out of which 52.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.0% are married couples living together, 33.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.0% are non-families. 20.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.48 and the average family size is 3.89. In the CDP the population is spread out with 43.1% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 23.6% from 25 to 44, 17.5% from 45 to 64, and 5.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 23 years. For every 100 females there are 86.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.6 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $15,625, and the median income for a family is $15,625. Males have a median income of $15,625 versus $12,159 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $6,603. 56.2% of the population and 45.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 68.8% of those under the age of 18 and 53.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
