White County, Illinois

White County is a county located in the state of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 15,371. Its county seat is Carmi, Illinois6. White County was devestated by the Tri-State Tornado. A good propportion of the 127 killed in Hamilton and White Counties were in White County itself. The main town affected was Carmi.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,299 km² (502 mi²). 1,282 km² (495 mi²) of it is land and 18 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.36% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 15,371 people, 6,534 households, and 4,377 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (31/mi²). There are 7,393 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (15/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.22% White, 0.26% Black or African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,534 households out of which 26.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.60% are married couples living together, 7.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.00% are non-families. 29.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.82. In the county the population is spread out with 21.50% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 25.30% from 25 to 44, 24.60% from 45 to 64, and 20.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 91.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.50 males. The median income for a household in the county is $29,601, and the median income for a family is $36,580. Males have a median income of $30,619 versus $17,282 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,412. 12.50% of the population and 8.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.70% of those under the age of 18 and 9.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
