Whitbread Literary Award

  Whitbread Book Awards
The Whitbread literary award is one of the main literary awards given to people who write books, and is thus one of the main events in the literary calendar. Sometimes announced as if it is the first of the year's literary prizes, it is actually the last. The Whitbread is about conveying the enjoyment of reading to the widest possible audience, and as such is a more populist literary prize than the Booker. The Whitbread Literary Awards were launched in 1971.

The Process

Five separate judging pannels pick five different shortlists in five different categories and then a winner in each category. The categories are;
  • Best novel
  • Best first novel
  • Children's
  • Poetry
  • Biography
The category winners receive 5,000 each and do not have to be British but must be resident in the UK for at least six months of the year. The overall Whitbread book of the year is chosen by a judging panel that comprises five judges from the previous category round and four new ones.
