Where The Wild Things Are

Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak is an illustrated children's book (ISBN 0060254920, ISBN 0099408392). It describes through fantasy how a young boy, Max in a distictive wolf suit, handles his anger at being sent to his room without supper. It was awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1979. The animated version has narration by and music composed by Peter Schickele, the music professor who gave us P. D. Q. Bach. The story also formed the basis of a children's opera by British composer Oliver Knussen. It was written 1979 - 1983, Knussen's Opus 20. The first (incomplete) performance was in Brussels in 1980, with the first complete performance of the final version given by the Glyndebourne Touring Opera in London in 1984. This was followed the next year by its first U.S. performance in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The song "Where The Wild Things Are" by Metallica is based on the book.
