Wheeler Peak was formerly called Taos Peak, named after the nearby town of Taos, New Mexico. Wheeler Peak is a part of the Southern Rocky Mountains, which stretch from southern New Mexico north into Colorado. The other noteworthy peak in the vicinity is Mt.
