Wheeler Peak (Nevada) - For other mountains by this name, see Wheeler Peak.
Wheeler Peak is the second highest peak in Nevada. The distinction of highest peak in the state goes to Boundary Peak which is very near the Nevada-California border. Wheeler Peak is an isolated peak located within Great Basin National Park near the Utah border. Wheeler Peak is generally considered a more impressive peak than Boundary Peak since it is the highest in more than a 200 mile (320 km) radius, whereas Boundary Peak has a higher mountain less than 1 mile (1 km) away. Under the base of the mountain are the Lehman Caves, a limestone cavern with many formations, most notably a large collection of "shields". Tours of the caves are offered year round by the National Park Service. Higher up on the side of the mountain is a grove of ancient bristlecone pine trees, including one that was the oldest known living thing on Earth at over 4,900 years old when it was cut down in 1964. Topping off the mountain is the remnants of an active glacier, now transformed into a rock glacier. External Links Wheeler Peak information at Great Basin National Park web site
