The county is named for Royal Tyler Wheeler, a chief justice of the state supreme court. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,371 km² (915 mi²). 2,368 km² (914 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.12% water. Adjacent counties Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,284 people, 2,152 households, and 1,487 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (6/mi²). There are 2,687 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (3/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.83% White, 2.78% Black or African American, 0.78% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 6.64% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. 12.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,152 households out of which 29.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.00% are married couples living together, 7.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.90% are non-families. 29.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.94. In the county, the population is spread out with 24.90% under the age of 18, 6.50% from 18 to 24, 22.50% from 25 to 44, 25.20% from 45 to 64, and 20.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 92.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.40 males. The median income for a household in the county is $31,029, and the median income for a family is $36,989. Males have a median income of $26,790 versus $19,091 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,083. 13.00% of the population and 11.60% of families are below the poverty line.
