Weston, West Virginia

Weston is a city located in Lewis County, West Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,317. It is the county seat of Lewis County. Jackson's Mill, the preserved grist mill of Cummins Jackson, an uncle of Stonewall Jackson, who raised him and his sister after their parents died, is the centerpiece of a historical site and museum at the Jackson's Mill Center for Lifelong Learning and State 4-H Camp. The facility, located near Weston, serves as a special campus for West Virginia University (WVU) and the WVU Extension Service.

Geography

Weston is located at 39°2'31" North, 80°28'12" West (39.041857, -80.469929). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²). 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 4,317 people, 1,942 households, and 1,172 families residing in the city. The population density is 980.5/km² (2,533.5/mi²). There are 2,222 housing units at an average density of 504.7/km² (1,304.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.24% White, 0.19% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.72% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. 0.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,942 households out of which 24.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.4% are married couples living together, 13.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.6% are non-families. 34.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.84. In the city the population is spread out with 20.3% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 83.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.4 males. The median income for a household in the city is $26,690, and the median income for a family is $33,783. Males have a median income of $27,988 versus $17,335 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,089. 18.8% of the population and 15.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.8% of those under the age of 18 and 9.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
