West Virginia University At ParkersburgWest Virginia University at Parkersburg is a community college in Parkersburg, West Virginia administered by West Virginia University. It has community collge jurisdiction over Wood County, West Virginia and Jackson County, West Virginia. It is the only community college element of WVU. WVU does not even have community college jurisdiction over the county where its main campus is located. The school was founded in 1970 as the Parkersburg Community College (PCC). In 1990 Governor Gaston Caperton sought to divide the state into two systems of college governance, one for Marshall University and West Virginia University and one for the state's state colleges and community colleges. The speaker of the state House of Delegates was from Parkersburg and demanded that PCC be renamed as his price for supporting the bill and the school became WVU-P. This situation has continued, even after the Capperton system of governance was abandoned in 1998 and despite the discongruity of mission between WVU as a residential Land-Grant university and WVU-P as, primarially a night school based part-time community college. The school has no athletic teams, however it does brisk business in Parkersburg with WVU-P merchandise, due to the association with the main campus.
