West Stockbridge, MassachusettsWest Stockbridge is a town located in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,416. History West Stockbridge was first settled in 1766 and was officially incorporated in 1775. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 48.3 km² (18.6 mi²). 47.9 km² (18.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.86% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,416 people, 601 households, and 406 families residing in the town. The population density is 29.6/km² (76.6/mi²). There are 769 housing units at an average density of 16.1/km² (41.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.09% White, 0.28% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.92% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. 0.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 601 households out of which 28.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.9% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.4% are non-families. 27.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.86. In the town the population is spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 4.9% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 31.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.2 males. The median income for a household in the town is $51,000, and the median income for a family is $64,464. Males have a median income of $40,865 versus $32,273 for females.
