Geography West Pelzer is located at 34°38'47" North, 82°28'30" West (34.646276, -82.474906). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²). 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 879 people, 395 households, and 250 families residing in the town. The population density is 692.6/km² (1,796.4/mi²). There are 440 housing units at an average density of 346.7/km² (899.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.11% White, 3.75% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 0.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 395 households out of which 28.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.8% are married couples living together, 17.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.5% are non-families. 33.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.77. In the town the population is spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 11.4% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 85.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.2 males. The median income for a household in the town is $28,375, and the median income for a family is $34,702. Males have a median income of $30,500 versus $23,250 for females.
