West Hattiesburg, Mississippi

West Hattiesburg also known as Oak Grove is the portion of Hattiesburg, Mississippi located in Lamar County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the area had a total population of 16,305, but more land farther west was annexed in 2003.

Geography

West Hattiesburg is located at 31°19'16" North, 89°22'3" West (31.321239, -89.367437). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 18.6 km² (7.2 mi²). 18.3 km² (7.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.39% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 16,305 people, 4,464 households, and 2,601 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 377.3/km² (892.0/mi²). There are 2,633 housing units at an average density of 143.8/km² (372.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 74.88% White, 22.11% African American, 0.06% Native American, 1.63% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 1.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,464 households out of which 32.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.3% are married couples living together, 14.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% are non-families. 24.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.00. In the CDP the population is spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 15.7% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 91.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.2 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $44,663, and the median income for a family is $68,287. Males have a median income of $49,552 versus $43,873 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $38,988. 0.0% of the population and 0.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
