West City is a village located in Franklin County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 716.

Geography

West City is located at 37°59'40" North, 88°56'30" West (37.994564, -88.941639). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.2 km² (1.6 mi²). 4.2 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 716 people, 305 households, and 193 families residing in the village. The population density is 171.7/km² (443.7/mi²). There are 330 housing units at an average density of 79.1/km² (204.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 97.21% White, 0.56% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.82% from two or more races. 0.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 305 households out of which 25.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.9% are married couples living together, 13.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% are non-families. 31.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.92. In the village the population is spread out with 22.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.8 males. iii am testing The median income for a household in the village is $21,250, and the median income for a family is $28,155. Males have a median income of $21,000 versus $18,333 for females. The per capita income for the village is $12,328. 22.1% of the population and 18.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.9% of those under the age of 18 and 13.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
