Wellsboro, PennsylvaniaWellsboro is a borough located in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 3,328. It is the county seat of Tioga County. Wellsboro was the site of one of the first factories where light bulbs were mass-produced, using machines whose design remains essentially unchanged from the early 20th century when the Corning company established the plant in the town. Geography Wellsboro is located at 41°44'48" North, 77°18'7" West (41.746794, -77.301881). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 12.7 km² (4.9 mi²). 12.7 km² (4.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.61% water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 3,328 people, 1,469 households, and 866 families residing in the borough. The population density is 262.8/km² (681.0/mi²). There are 1,602 housing units at an average density of 126.5/km² (327.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 98.14% White, 0.39% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.21% from two or more races. 0.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,469 households out of which 25.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.0% are married couples living together, 9.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.0% are non-families. 36.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.17 and the average family size is 2.83. In the borough the population is spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 24.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 80.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.3 males. The median income for a household in the borough is $30,169, and the median income for a family is $39,898. Males have a median income of $37,083 versus $20,492 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $18,096. 14.8% of the population and 9.5% of families are below the poverty line.
