Wellington High SchoolWellington High School is a co-educational secondary school in downtown Wellington, New Zealand. In 2004 the roll was approximately 1200 students. Most notable for its buildings, which date from 1980 and are in the neo-brutalist style, with pyramidal roofs resemblent of outlets of Kentucky Fried Chicken (or KFC). History It was founded in 1886 by Arthur Dewhurst Riley as part of the vocational Wellington Technical College and it moved to its present site on Taranaki Street from Mercer Street in 1924. The two parts of the College for secondary and tertiary education split, and the upper part became the Wellington Polytechnical School (now Massey University). Current affairs The School has taken the award for Education Exporter of the Year 2004, and the student radio station, Livewire, has won several Young Enterprise awards. The principal as of 2004 was Prue Kelly. That same year, students at the school campaigned for the eviction of the Wellington branch of the Destiny Church, which was using the school hall for its sermons. Notes The School is often confused with the Wellington College (and vice-versa), a boys-only school 500m away. There is also a Wellington High School in Florida. External link
