Welland (Electoral District)

Welland is the name of a federal electoral district in Ontario, Canada. Its population is 108,876. (2001)

Geography

The district includes the Cities of Welland, Thorold, and Port Colborne as well as the Township of Wainfleet and the extreme southern part of the City of St. Catharines.

History

The electoral district was created in 2003 74.9% from Niagara Centre, 22.5% from ErieLincoln and 2.7% from Niagara Falls.

There was also a district called Welland that existed from 1867 to 1987. It was created by the British North America Act. In 1867, it consisted of all of Welland County except Wainfleet Township and Pelham Township. In 1903 it consisted of the entire county. In 1952, it loses Stamford Township, Willoughby Township, Bertie Township, the City of Niagara Falls, and the Towns of Fort Erie, Chippawa, and Crystal Beach. In 1966, it loses the city and township of Thorold, the Town of Fonthill, and Pelham Township, but adds Canborough Township, Dunn Township, Moulton Township, and Sherbrooke Township. In 1976 it loses all its territory except the City of Welland and gains back the Town of Thorold and gets the most extreme southern part of the City of St. Catharines. The district was abolished in 1987 into WellandSt. CatharinesThorold. List of Members
